You've got to see it to believe it!

These are some photos that I've been trying to get since we moved here. Some things can only be seen to be truly understood! I've heard that sometimes, there is a cat that rides on the carabao. We'll post photos of that when we can.

Mogathin (that's 'hello' in Yapese)

This is a Yapese local house. It is next to the home that the family lives in. John met this family last week and had an enjoyable discussion with Julieta. He asked Alice (a sister from Yap with seven wonderful boys) to return to visit her since she speaks Yapese much better than English. We also discovered that Julieta is related to Alice. Both women are looking forward to seeing each other to share spiritual conversation.

and they lived in tents...

This humble home belongs to a woman that we are currently visiting. I met her about three weeks ago. Their home was about 100 feet from where it is now and behind a fence. She and her boyfriend greeted my partner and me and accepted a Watchtower and a Truth tract that I pushed through the fence. When Jeanny saw that it, she tossed it to her boyfriend and rolled her eyes. I asked why she did that. She said it is about the Bible and she is a Catholic. I asked if she had learned how to be happy from the Catholic church. She stared at me for a moment, then said no. I asked her to take the Truth tract and find the section about happiness. We discussed that together.  Since the paragraphs mention being conscious of our spiritual need, I asked if she knew God's name. "Of course, Jesus." We read John 17:3 to show that there are two people talked about, the son being Jesus. Then we read Psalm 83:18 to find God's name.
The next week, she told me that she had read the Truth tract and really enjoyed it. She also remembered God's name. Oh, and her attitude was completely different. It is a difference we've seen a lot here. After reading the Bible and literature with the truth in it, people change. She is already smiling. Jeanny asked for a Bible. Finally, she was home again and readily accepted her own Bible and copy of the Bible Teach book. She is expecting me this week so we can start our study together.

Statues, anyone?

I am always amazed at the various ways that folks display their statues. This particular display is full of 'nativity scenes.'

A New Family

Last Thursday, John was in service with a young brother. They accidentally visited a family that had just been called on. They chatted a bit, showed the family the Truth tract and discussed a little of it. Then, Fenina asked John if they could go to church with him on Sunday. Sure!! On Saturday, we went to see them and make sure they would be ready at the right time. They assured us they had never studied with or talked with Witnesses before but thought they could learn about the Bible.
On Sunday, John went to pick them up. All of them were ready to go when he pulled up. Before that, though, they had received opposition from family and neighbors that told them not to go with us. Fenina said they were going anyway, because they wanted to learn about the Bible.
At the meeting, all followed along with rapt attention. They are looking forward to having their own Bible study.

Local Wildlife

Happiness is....

For Yumi, it's ice cream, pouring rain, and her favorite man, John.

Mary

This is a special Mary. This statue and her paraphernalia are sent to different locations. I saw it in a flower shop. The owner said that people come and say 1000 (he really said one thousand) Hail Marys in front of this statue.

This Little Piggy....

...is going to be dinner.

Clothes Drying Techniques

Most people here don't have clothes dryers. So, they use what's available.

Breadfruit

This is one of the ways to prepare breadfruit. It is a very large fruit, about the size of a football, sometimes larger. It is peeled, boiled, then pounded while it is still hot. This activates the starch in it and it slowly works itself into a ball. It doesn't have a lot of flavor, but it is an accompaniment to salted fish or other meats with a lot of flavor, especially salt.
Some folks prefer not to eat this right away, so they wrap the pounded breadfruit in banana leaves, bury it, then eat it after quite some time has passed. It is fermented and very smelly.

Good Friends

Meet Sierra. We had such a good time together while John and I were in Pohnpei. This girl can do anything! Work construction, Bake wonderful goodies, Take care of little ones, Speak a  handful of languages, and Share a great laugh with friends---just to name a few of her talents
She was able to come to Guam for our district convention. We are hoping to see her again and make some new memories together.
